Coindesk Korea – Editorial Policy

Coindesk Korea’s Mission

CoinDeskKorea is a blockchain specialty media which has a brand and content licensing relationship with CoinDesk, Inc. CoinDesk Korea delivers to readers the developments of crypto currencies and blockchain technology, and how they change daily lives of the society and individuals. We provide a forum where experts and innovators endeavoring to build a more innovative and democratic socio-economic system can share their knowledge and experiences.

Editorial independence

CoinDeskKorea provides its readers with the greatest possible coverage of major incidents and issues both in South Korea and overseas and regards the public interest as the paramount value of this coverage. The question as to what kind of reporting serves the public interest is determined independently, on the basis of the facts and the staff’s conscience. We do not tolerate any inappropriate interference or pressure that opposes or violates the principle that the public interest comes first.

CoinDeskKorea produces articles independently of all external interests, including stockholders, investors, and advertisers. We do not accept any compensation, either in cash or in kind, for articles or product reviews.

Fair reporting Adequate reporting and coverage

Matters that are worth covering are reported to the greatest possible extent and communicated to our readers. We explore a wide range of facets and angles so that our readers can both understand the fundamentals and get the full story.

Coverage of controversial issues

When covering controversial issues, we attempt to remain balanced. Reporters must approach such issues free of preconceptions and must meet a number of people with different perspectives and positions to ensure they are not biased one way or the other.

National interest

The national interest does not stop us from covering the facts we have learned through our reporting, barring an obvious and urgent reason to do so.

Guaranteeing the right to respond

Individuals that our articles present in a negative light are guaranteed an opportunity to defend themselves and adequate time in which to do so. Insofar as it is possible, reporters must make a sincere effort to meet them in person and hear their claims. When the urgency of the situation requires us to run the article before receiving a legitimate response, the response is run in a subsequent article. This guarantee does not apply, however, when the facts of the matter have been plainly established or when there is a substantial reason to believe they are true.

Accurate reporting Verified reporting

Our articles are based on verified facts, and we ensure that these facts have been verified by multiple sources. While timely reporting is a critical function of the media, we do not attempt to gain the lead in the race to break the news by recklessly printing unverified information. When sources make claims or leak information that is one-sided, we confirm its factuality through our own reporting.

Distinguishing facts and opinions

In our coverage of some issue or incident, particular care is taken to avoid confusing readers by mixing verified facts with reporters’ subjective views and opinions. Our articles, commentary, editorials, and columns clearly distinguish the facts, claims about the facts, and the writer’s opinions and judgments about them in ways that are clear to the reader, such as by specifying the subject of the sentence and by punctuating quotations precisely.

Specifying sources

The sources of all information on which the article is based are identified as specifically as possible.

Quotations

Books, documents, and other texts are quoted with strict accuracy. When a source is being quoted directly, their words are as a rule quoted verbatim. When a source’s comments are deemed to be too difficult for readers to understand, however, they can be altered to better convey the intended meaning, or an appropriate explanation can be added.

Prohibition on false quotations, fabrications, and plagiarism

False quotations, fabricated information, and plagiarized material may never be used, not only in articles but also in recordkeeping or in documentation about our reporting. Fictional names, ages, locations, and dates are not used in our news articles. Fictional characters and pseudonyms may be used in feature stories to aid readers’ understanding, but the reason for their use must be specified in the feature.

Translation

When translating an article in a foreign language for publication, an effort is made to convey the content of the original article as accurately as possible. Subjective translation is acceptable when necessary to aid readers’ understanding, but the intention of the original text may not be willfully distorted.

Responsibility for corroborating articles

Reporters bear the ultimate responsibility for demonstrating the accuracy of the articles they have reported and written. They are ultimately responsible even when a direct quotation by a source turns out to be untrue.

Retractions and corrections

Inaccuracies in articles are vigorously corrected. Retractions are written clearly, courteously, and in sufficient detail.

Avoiding conflicts of interests Priority on reporting the truth

The truth comes before the interests of the company or of individual reporters. The company and its reporters are willing to endure hardship if that is necessary to bring readers the truth.

Prohibition on private gain

Information acquired during the reporting process is not used to benefit the company or individual reporters. That includes using undisclosed or confidential information in cryptocurrency or stock investment, either to make a financial profit or to avoid a financial loss.

Vigilance about conflicts of interests

Reporters take great pains to ensure that their political, economic, and social interests, as well as those of their relatives, do not affect their reporting and coverage.

Avoiding potential conflicts of interests

Reporters with CoinDeskKorea do not participate in any activities outside the company that would cause others to doubt their objectivity or that could reasonably damage the company’s credibility and reputation.

Disclosing investment information

CoinDeskKorea reporters disclose investments in cryptocurrencies. Non-staff contributors disclose cryptocurrency-related activities.
